What type of language learner are You?

December 12, 2007 – 7:42 pm

There are several types of language learners. To which type to You belong to?

1.) The Job and Business learner

This person is interested in making money and business with economically growing countries. Languages that are considered hip for this person include Mandarin, Russian and Spanish. Somewhat rarer but also existing are learners who learn the language of a small country for business purposes. The main Business learner probably also has to consider the “Mandarin or Cantonese?” question.

2.) The fun learner

This type has lots of reasons to learn a language. Maybe he likes Anime and learns Japanese. Or this person likes a particular script and therefore learns this language. Examples include several of the Asian languages like Korean or Chinese. Or the person has seen a documentation about a country and now wants to learn the language. For example a person who learns the Mongolian language. Often these languages have limited economical value.

3.) The family reasons learner

A person who learns a language, because he marries a person from another country. Popular examples include Mandarin Chinese or Thai. Sometimes the learner is not too much interested in the language and only does it out of necessity. I think this is not good, because a proper motivation is a must if someone wants to master a language.

4.) The linguist

He learns a language just to check it out. Hopefully he can make some money with his insights.
