Wen Jiabao faces public shoethrowing
February 2, 2009 – 10:27 pmChinese PM Wen Jiabao faced a protester who threw a stinky sportsshoe at him. The protester called Wen a dictator and liar. Shoethrowing as modern form of protest became popular last year, when a protester in Baghdad threw his shoe at the US president of that time, George W. Bush. Wen Jiabao seemed neither amused, nor shocked about this incident and went on with his speech. The protester, who missed Wen by several meters, was then arrested and removed from the audience. The whole thing happened in Cambridge university, however when the protester was removed, there was applause indicating support for Wen Jiabao, according to witnesses. If shoethrowing becomes mainstream has yet to be seen.
Showthrowing has been all the rage recently. Keep Your citizens happy or fear the shoe!
Update, one day after shoethrowing incident:
When Muntadhir al-Zaidi threw his shoe at George W. Bush, the scene was repeated countless times in Chinese media, however this time there was only silence. None of the government media stations mentioned the shoethrowing at Wen Jiabao until now. At the same time it seems that the shoethrower is a German, although this is unconfirmed at the moment.
