Take a daytrip to Macao
March 22, 2009 – 2:56 pmIf You are staying in HK and do have some time left, You could visit Macao as well. Furthermore, some people have to do a short trip to Macao once in a while, because they have a 3-months Hong Kong visa, but want to stay longer. So they go to Macao once in a while to refresh their Hong Kong visa. It’s called a visa run
. Macao is a nice visit, no matter if You have to go there or want to go there and the trip is fast, either by helicopter or TurboJet ferry.

First of all take the Ferry from HK to Macao, which costs You about 200 $HK one way, depends on which time You want to go. You can buy the tickets on the upper floor of the building. Once I arrived at the ferry terminal in Macao, I had to fill out one of those funny personal information papers and then go through the customs. In the main arrival hall in one corner of the ground floor is a city information office, where they give away city maps and other guide material for free. The assistants there are happy to recommend some places to You as well, if You have something specific in Your mind. I asked where I can find a cafe, upon which they recommended several dozens of places to me.

Then I headed to the city by a private taxi, which cost me 100 $HK, which was basically a rip of, but I didn’t bother to find the real taxis. One hour later, after a iced cafe latte at my beloved Starbucks, I was sitting in a green park and I can really recommend those to You. Macao has some nice parks and also some old ruins, including a great fortress on the mountain hill. Also, Macao has a real lovely Mediterranean flair, I felt like standing somewhere in typical Southern Italy, when I got out of the taxi in the beautiful old town of Macao.

After exploring the Macao lowlands, I decided to go to the massive fortress on the central mountain in Macao. The way was really hard to find. I guess most people use some kind of vehicle to get there, but I prefer to go by foot. Well, the castle itself is not that impressive after all, but the view over this gambling city is just awesome.

Commander, the cannon is ready to fire at those imperialistic casinos
I didn’t peek into any of the casinos this day, because I just wanted to explore the city of Macao and I couldn’t find an avid gambler to join me and explain those games in the casino. Next time I’d like to have some expert gambling addict with me, so I can be sure to do the right things in the casinos.

I wanted to go in january! But then, I only stayed 5 days in HK… not enough time to see everything there :S Hope next time I can see Macao… How are people different in Macao compared to HK? And food? I felt Hong Kong food was not so yummy… I like Singaporean and Malaysian food better… How bout you?

Uhm well… I ate Thai fast food, while I was in Macao. I only stayed 1 day.
There are so many “foreign” people, it’s difficult to say who is tourist and who is a local person, the tourists seem to outnumber the locals. Overall worth a visit, but don’t stay to long. I just rushed through all the important historic sites in one day and also checked out 2 parks, but left out the casinos totally.
On the other hand, if You have to much time and money, why not stay in an exclusive hotel, gamble and relax in this city for some days. Sounds promising as well.

Oh, I see. A single day trip should be ok. Besides, Macao is not as big as HK, so should be easy to see the main sights in one day. Next time I go to HK, I’ll definitely drop by in Macao.
