GB2BIG Simplified Traditional Chinese automatic translation Plugin for Firefox

Are You annoyed by some people who can’t stop using outdated traditional characters? Are You annoyed by the hip crowd that jumps on any train and thinks simplified characters are cool? Everyone of us probably prefers either simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese and is annoyed if the unwanted comes up. Users of the Firefox Webbrowser can relax now, because there is a wonderful plugin to make an automatic translation from simplified to traditional or vice versa. Quite some people already know this plugin, if You don’t, then check it out.

GB2BIG is a Firefox plugin to do an automatic translation between simplified and traditional with one single click. After installation You can place one or both buttons for the automatic translation in the toolbar. I have placed the Chinese flag button there. Whenever I encounter some traditional text I simply hit that button and within a second the whole text there is automatically translated into simplified Chinese. There is a third button for proxy services, however it doesn’t seem to work for me. Personally I don’t mess around with plugins, because the slow down the webbrowser without offering value, but GB2BIG is one of those that actually helps with learning and understanding Chinese. Great tool for Chinese learners.

  2. Traditional Characters are quite “in” here in HK.

By the way: there are significant grammatical differences between Cantonese and Mandarin.

So the plugin might be good if you compare Taiwan (Republic of China) vs. China (PRC), but not for “translating/converting” such characters in Cantonese texts.

  3. Yep, You are right. This is mostly for translating Mandarin text… or “converting” characters might be even better. Useful anyway.
